A suggestion from live chat: Gift certificates that can be purchased and then redeemed at checkout.

The gift certificate function can essentially be an extension of the coupon code module. The other option would be to have an option for creating a coupon code and restrict total coupons used to once.... rather than once per user. This is an essential option. I am not a programmer, but I would think the easiest way would be to add a field on the coupon code creation page to limit "TOTAL USES". It would also be nice if there was an automated way where the system created the coupon code as once for "TOTAL USES" after the user purchased one and then email the customer the code in an e-mail... doesn't necessarily have to be the confirmation email, but an additional email.

For some reason I thought HW already had this, yes this is a much needed module to add. Able to assign a random redeem code or to type your own (for physical gift certificates)... or perhaps one that would be linked to an existing account, thus when you log in you would see the balance... similar to how itunes does it for credit. Egift Cards could email the recipient notice of the gift certificate and show them the senders info and message (Happy birthday etc)...

I was just searching the forum for ideas on how to do gift certificates. I sell quite a few gift certificates in my brick & mortar store and would love to have an easy way to incorporate that into my website.

I've always done them as fyrecig mentions with coupon codes via my Shopify store. Would be nice to have legit ones.

I like the idea too.
I did think that the coupon code set up allowed for limiting the use to ONCE ... I took that to mean ONLY once, not once per user.
Over the years, I have set people a code as a 'merchandise credit" by setting it up as a coupon code. But, I have never tested to be sure it could actually only be used one time.
Ive been meaning to set up a listing as a gift certificate.... and then Id have to either email it to the user, or even see if there is a vendor selling small qtys of actual plastic gift cards (which I would probably just put a label onto with the code.

Sell/Redeem gift certificates for any amount you desire.
Balance retention - keeps track of the balance on all gift certificates, so customers can return to shop.
Ability to refill the balance on existing gift certificates.

Oh Tomas if the Gift Cards could be given a random code, or an assigned code/number/word would be great to.. When I print Cards for people they usually use this to choose their own word, or perhaps a name, or lucky number etc for the redeeming code.. We write this or print this on the cards we print and send to the end user... so allowing this would be great... Sometimes auto generated numbers could be too easy to guess and use someone else's code so please keep that in mind.

NICE! And LOL at the names used.
Will the customer be able to partially use gift certificates and then use it up at a later time?

"Will the customer be able to partially use gift certificates and then use it up at a later time?"
They won't be able to specify an amount to use, but if they don't use it all on one order, it will keep track of the balance left on the gift card.
Examples:
If they have a $100.00 gift card and their order total is $134.23, they'll need to pay $34.23 to complete checkout.
If they have a $100.00 gift card and their order total is $75.65, They'll be able to complete the checkout and pay $0.00. Their certificate will have a remaining balance of $24.35.

Nice so far Tomas... Will we be able to customize the appearance of the printable/emailed gift certificate/card (logo, background, colors, or entire graphic perhaps)? Can you somehow offer the option to generate a code that would be placed on a physical card/certificate that is mailed to the customer?

This will be offered on a later release of the gift certificate system. We'll probably offer more than one theme such as "Birthday, Christmas, Boy, Girl, General, etc..." All of which will be able to be edited.
Also in the later release we'll offer the ability to generate codes from the admin to be used as a store credit.

This is sooooo exciting!!! I know this is probably premature because you're still working on it... But will the purchaser have the option to send the Gift Certificate either mailed via Snail Mail or electronically via email to the recipient? I can see times when speed could be a deal closer, like when someone has forgotten to go shopping and needs a last minute gift WAY faster than snail mail...... For example: OMG, I totally forgot it was my wifes birthday TOMORROW!!!!

I agree, the gift cards Ive soft with most of my clients most sales are E-Gift Cards I'd say 80% of them, but then the others want something snail mailed... let it be a simple generic gift certificate, something printed like business cards that I print or the fancy plastic cards...Im excited Tomas is cranking away on this, And love the themed ideas... be nice to see what we can do with it... if we can just get access to the gift certificate css , then Im sure most of us could customize it ourself. Bravo Tomas... some sort of notes/log would be nice if you click a certificate number to view its usage as well and corresponding orders etc that would be very handy at times when people thought their was more on a card etc..

For now all gift certificates will be treated as non-physical. We'll email the recipient with the gift certificate details automatically when the order is marked as paid. It'll be up to you if you want to send a physical gift card.
"some sort of notes/log would be nice if you click a certificate number to view its usage as well and corresponding orders etc that would be very handy at times when people thought their was more on a card etc.."
All details regarding usage, orders will be available in the admin. The customer will be able to enter the code on the store side to just obtain the available balance but no detailed history.
