Send more detail to Paypal during a transaction

I've only been with Highwire for a few days and out of 6 sales, I've had two customers already complain about the lack of item descriptions and that the shipping wasn't broken out in Paypal. This is standard with other storefront software, and it's troublesome to me that HW isn't doing this, especially when it's already causing issues with my customers.

Also, from a U.S. legal standpoint, Paypal is going to be required to begin reporting transaction totals with their customers over a certain amount as I-9s. As such, the totals that are not broken out are going to be reported as taxable income versus partial taxable income and non-taxable shipping. I'd prefer not to risk an audit for something that can be remedied so easily.

Well.. its all "income" (to your business) then you deduct all of your expences (including the postage you purchase, the inventory you purchase, etc etc etc).  So, its not a taxes issue.

Your customers should be getting an order confirmation email sent by your highwire account.  THat email does show item titles, qtys, and prices.  (unless youve changed it so that it doesnt...you can modify the email under

When I first got started, I bought something from myself so that I could see all the messages and such as a buyer would.  (you have to have another paypal account to do it, or else it wont let you.... another way to do it would be to ask a good friend or family member to buy something and forward you all the emails to you.... then just refund them through paypal)

Actually, it IS a tax issue. In some states, you are required to charge sales tax on shipping and handling if it is associated with a taxable goods or services purchase. Customers do pay attention to such things, and if Paypal is going to be reporting the totals, I want to be able to address what they report. If they report a total as a lump sum and don't break out shipping, it becomes that much more of an auditable issue.

Ditto!  More detail transmitted to paypal is definitely possible if Highwire wants to provide it.  Other hosted store carts itemize the purchase by product detail and show shipping.

I certainly agree that the most amount of data that can be provided to Paypal, the better. Data is sacred to being complete and accurate.
